This upcoming Saturday is just a milepost of kinds - I change 50!As I enter the 2nd half of my life [sic], I look right back at the initial 50 years with an excellent feeling of satisfaction and exuberance. I've been endowed with the opportunities afforded me - both personally and in business - have met incredible top quality people on the way and have been humbled by the associations that I've fostered. Additionally, I have had the great fortune of spending some 20 years with major firms before transcending into buying my own, personal firm going back 8 years. I certainly wish that my next 50 years will undoubtedly be as invigorating.Last week, I'd a way to give the National Honor Society at my son's high school. I was expected to present on my business background and what I have learned all through my career. In preparing my speech, I had the chance to think on a number of things that I have "learned" and how I fortunate my career undoubtedly has been. Here are a few thoughts from that presentation:Life Is Not Fair, But You Own It: You get some, you lose some....sometimes you are just completely attached. It occurs and there is no way of preventing it entirely - but it can be minimized by you. Your choice is to allow fate cope your hand or continually be prepared for what may forsake you. I have always believed that if I'd answers to dilemmas in advance of them propagating, I stood a chance to be able to overcome the barrage. You may possibly not be able to endure anything thrown at you, however in many cases, you may force away the downside. You Have To Start At The Bottom: A lot of today's college grads are looking for the mid-manager to senior-level careers on day one. That hope in today's job market, will go unfulfilled. While I'm certain there are some hugely skilled grads out there, every one starts at the end. The sooner that premise is accepted by you, the faster you will start your job rise. Besides, anything can be learnt by you in just about any situation, it's you that determines if you're willing to be coachable.Grab All The Responsibility You Can: Break outside of your safe place if you desire to surpass your expectations. I owe a of gratitude to my two employers that I had at a shop chain, for what I became in my own career. I was a guy" when I came through their steady confidence in my skills, they expanded my business acumen -- in both depth and breadth -- to include services management, IT, capital and property. Many of the projects I've been involved with at own business, combine some or all of these disciplines.Network With People: Thankfully, LinkedIn was created! I have been a solid connector and networker but ahead of LinkedIn, every contact was followed personally! Now with a circle north of 13 million on LinkedIn (2,100 1st degree contacts) and a of 7,500 contacts within my power supplies repair, personally I think certain that I'm well-informed and connected. For the individuals at the high school, this fell to the "it's not what you know, it is who know" camp.Do not Hesitate Of The Abyss: Much like getting most of the duty you may, getting past the "fear factor" may be the key to dealing with and defeating huge issues because they are shown. Over time, driving a car of the "abyss" has disappeared and in fact, has made me seek greater and greater issues. Need to succeed may be the key ingredient to any effective career.Everyone Could Have A Lousy Boss: Or managers. It's the way of the planet. Driving around or with a lousy manager isn't a simple task. Realizing that everyone has experienced this scenario as well, should make the discussion less invasive. Have a deep breath, try to seek common ground and a cure for the greatest -- or perhaps a transfer! You Will Lose Certainly One Of Your Jobs: Layoffs, bankruptcies, acquisitions, errors, downsizing, relocations and the list continues on. So many "out of one's control" factors can determine whether you hold your job or not. Oh yeah, and so does your personal performance. Nowadays, losing your task is the majority - only ask the people which are unemployed. As of January, 2012, the Usa is 15.2 million jobs from full employment (understood to be the employment problems that existed at the peak of the Clinton boom, in April 2000). That is a lot of "out of work" companions.Develop An Attitude To Persevere: Your job is yours - own it. No matter what the circumstances, it boils down for you being the "CEO" of one's career. Accept that concept and you will persevere. Your career is really a long-steady work - enjoy the work, the sweat and above all, the major associations which are constructed over the years. Here's to the next 50 years!
