We found cheap homes for sale all over the country. I and my wife Ana were on a seven-week drive round the country. It had been a holiday, but we looked at houses too, and ordered one in a fantastic little town in the mountains of western Montana. It cost $17,500, and after $2000 to repair it up, we lived there for many months before attempting to sell it for $28,000.

We liked Anaconda. Where else would you fly fish, visit a three-dollar film in a old art-deco theatre (the 5th most beautiful in the country, in line with the Smithsonian), fall some nickles in a slot machine, eat at a good restaurant, visit the bar for a money beer, and buy a house for under $30,000 - all within a four block area! You will find churches and great schools, a collection with quick online sites, and wildlife (including bears) a hundred or so yards from downtown.

Why Are There Cheap Houses For Sale?

There are inexpensive houses in Anaconda, and nearby Butte since there are not many good jobs. I easily found jobs in Anaconda - but not good ones. This explains why people left the location in the 80's, following the mines and smelters closed.

Thirteen % of the "housing units" in Anaconda are vacant, based on the 2,000 U.S. census. This has pushed down the house prices substantially. Because it still has all of the standard ammenities, is cleaner now, and is gradually recovering, it's a great place to retire to or to go to if you have an internet or other non-location-based business.

An unhealthy local economy is the reason cheap houses can be bought by you in lots of areas of the country. These are towns which have seen troubled situations, but are often recovering, often with good reasons. Anaconda, for example, now has, along with it is a resort, lovely mountain scenery and a Jack Nicholas course. Houses cost four times as much an hour or so in virtually any way, and those costs are bound to reach Anaconda in the course of time.

Low priced Properties You don't Desire To Get

You will find villages just like the one in South Dakota day where we stopped for lunch one. A bulletin board had ads for inexpensive houses for sale by desperate people trying to not function as last to leave town. There clearly was a photograph of a beautiful old five-bedroom farmhouse for $11,000. As we ate, we looked up the deserted street and pointed out that all of the buildings were boarded-up. This is a dying town, with nothing to simply help restore it. A totally free house would not be described as a good enough reason to go here.

Cheap Home Available - Our Standards

There are many wonderful villages, from Florida to Oregon, where there are low priced houses available. After our Montana experience, a website was started by us about them. What does a city need to be able to make our number? The standards are very subjective, but include at least the following:

1. Citizenry of 4,000 to 80,000.

2. Reasonable library.

3. Great food store.

4. Movie theatre.

5. At the very least six houses on the market under $50,000.

6. The town has a good "feel" to it.

After much study, we found several cities that met our criteria, including some with homes at under $30,000. There really are wonderful cities out there where you could find low priced homes on the market. open site in new window
