The modern Olympics we see tend to be organized as an extension of the initial activities. There's much that's different, as the fundamental idea of sporting events is common to both.
The Olympic Games Weren't Always So Helpful
The initial Olympics were really only one section of four games held throughout the year. The others were the Nemean, Isthmian and Pythian Games. The Olympics, however, were definitely probably the most famous. Their name was derived by these games from Olympia, were they were held.

The Olympics were first held in 776 BC. The activities were section of a religious festival in honor of the Greek gods.
