This July, Annie Santana, a instructor at Mission Bay Senior School, part of the San Diego schools, departed the town and headed for the island of Robinson Crusoe, Chile. In the seventh year of her career, Santana joined the Fulbright teacher exchange program.

For just one year, Santana will teach English as another language at a school on the island; but her students will not be losing her. A Chilean teacher is going to be replacing Santana at Mission Bay. While both teachers are placing themselves to their new cultures, the students in both countries will also be revealed through their teachers to a new social knowledge and another country.
Because there are many differences between your countries, both teachers could have many issues to manage. Chilean classrooms, for example, are smaller in proportions than those in the Hillcrest schools. The culture-driven relationships between teacher and student are much closer in Chile, as well.

The contact was initiated by santana with the Fulbright teacher exchange program. She believed that she was prepared to advance to another degree of cross-cultural experiences by teaching abroad. The available options were thoroughly researched by santana. Many did not meet her needs, since she would need certainly to quit her teaching position with the North Park schools. The Fulbright program best fit her needs, since the exchange is just for an exchange teacher and one year can take her position, allowing her position to be retained by her with the San Diego schools.

Santana decided Chile, as it is more economically secure than other Latin American countries. She browse the House of Spirits, by Chilean writer Isabel Allende, to prepare for her trip to Chile. The book aptly portrays the culture in Chile, which will be mainly influenced by the many German immigrants over the years.

Before leaving in July, Santana remarked of her interest in experiencing the differences between the cultures of the U.S. and Chile. She also was excited to see how Chile differs from other Latin American countries, of which she's familiar from her own Mexican heritage. She also was looking forward to seeing how college operations change from the Hillcrest schools, in addition to social norms and the overall day-to-day routines.

Other variations that Santana and her students in the North Park schools will experience are the Chilean customs and the difference between your Spanish shown and known by Santana and Chilean Spanish, which has a different accent, slang and word usage.

Santana is planned to come back to america and the North Park schools in July 2007. Until then, she plans to speak with her the Chilean teacher, friends, household, and her North Park schools students through the Web. Everyone is wanted by her, particularly her Hillcrest schools students, to take pleasure from her adventure with her. It's a fantastic opportunity for them to experience life outside Hillcrest.
