So it is with duty. The idea of work varies much among different nations. In one country, if a person doesn't do certain things, people will say he's acted wrongly; while if he does those very things in another country, people will say that he didn't act rightly -- and yet we all know that there should be some universal notion of duty. In the exact same way, one class of society thinks that certain things are among its work, while another class thinks quite contrary and could be terrified if it had to do these things. Two ways are left open to us -- the way of the ignorant, who think that there is only 1 way to reality and that all the remainder are wrong, and the way of the wise, who acknowledge that, based on our mental constitution or the various planes of existence where we are, duty and morality can vary greatly. The important thing is to know that there are gradations of duty and of morality -- that the duty of one state of life,in one set of conditions, will not and cannot be that of another. To illustrate: All great teachers have taught, "Resist perhaps not evil," that low - resistance may be the highest moral ideal. We all know that, if a certain number of us attempted to put that belief fully into practice, the entire social fabric would drop to pieces, the evil would simply take control of our houses and our lives, and would do whatever they like with us. It would cause disaster, even though just one day of such non - weight were practised. Yet, intuitively, inside our heart of hearts we feel the reality of the teaching "Resist not evil." This seems to us to function as greatest ideal; yet to instruct this doctrine only will be comparable to condemning a massive part of humanity. Not merely so, it'd be making men feel that these were always doing wrong, and cause in them scruples of conscience in most their actions; it would destroy them, and than any weakness would that constant self - disapproval would breed more vice. To the person who has started to hate himself the door to damage has already opened; and exactly the same will additionally apply to a nation.
